The next Holy Grail would have to be a new Mary Wells album. A hastily assembled Greatest Hits LP had included the single. But that was before anyone knew what a blockbuster the song was going to be. Clearly, a dedicated “My Guy” album was needed. A long-play to celebrate Mary’s new “Queen of Pop” status. Mary Wells occupies a unique niche in pop music in that she was the first female artist on any of Motown's labels to have a hit record, and she remained as the vanguard in that regard until leaving the label in 1964, her hits during those years helping to define the Motown sound and style. The album features her signature hit of the same name (which had already appeared on Greatest Hits earlier in the year) and the proposed singles “Whisper You Love Me Boy” and “He’s the One I Love”, the latter later re-recorded by Tammi Terrell during her own brief Motown tenure. With a string of hit singles composed mainly by Smokey Robinson, including 'The One Who Really Loves You', 'Two Lovers' (1962), the Grammy-nominated 'You Beat Me to the Punch' (1962) and her signature hit, 'My Guy' (1964), she became recognized as 'The Queen of Motown' until her departure from the company in 1964, at the height of her popularity.

“Mary Wells Sings My Guy” is the fourth studio album and fifth overall album released by Motown vocalist Mary Wells. The album features her signature hit of the same name (which had already appeared on Greatest Hits earlier in the year) and the proposed singles “Whisper You Love Me Boy” and “He’s the One I Love”, the latter later re-recorded by Tammi Terrell during her own brief Motown tenure. It turned out to be the last studio effort Wells released for Motown as she left the label that year for 20th Century Fox Records.

Originally released as “My Guy” was topping the charts, this LP could have gone much further up the charts (peaking at #111 although her “Greatest Hits” LP out simultaneously hit #18) if Mary did not decide to leave Motown. The first two tracks of Side One “He’s The One I Love” and “Whisper You Love Me Boy” are among the finest tracks Mary cut at Motown. Either one would have been the perfect follow-up single to “My Guy”. The closing track of Side One “He Holds His Own” is the version cut before the Supremes a year later, but Mary continues to captivate listeners with her husky smooth vocals backed by The Four Tops AND Supremes. Side Two sees Mary in a MOR type setting with updated versions of “now” standards, “I Only Have Eyes For You”, “At Last”, “You Do Something To Me”, and notably “My Baby Just Cares For Me”. Mary’s vocal interplay with the Andantes makes this one of Motown’s first full listenable LP’s circa 1964. Overall, it is just not an LP of just one hit with hasty filler, nor is it a noisy dance album, it’s simply a nicely sequenced collection of well-crafted, well sung early Motown recordings.

One of the most dominating forces in the history of popular music, the Motown imprint was more than a label, it was a juggernaut of soul music, a machine so finely honed and working with such efficiency that it wasn’t uncommon for several chart topping hits to be recorded in one session. This anthology was previously issued in 2000 under the moniker Motown: The Classic Years. But a title more befitting of such a quality compilation would be Motown 101, for it contains practically every monumental chart topping hit that the label became known for across the globe. Nearly every song on this collection has been imprinted on the collective memory of popular culture, and with good reason. The insanely catchy, uptempo sound was the audio wallpaper for a generation facing dramatic changes socially, culturally and politically. Starting with the first major hits of the label courtesy of Barrett Strong (“Money”) and the Miracles (“Shop Around”), the artists included here read like a venerable who’s who A-list of soul music. Names like Marvin, Stevie, and Diana, as well as groups like the Temptations, the Four Tops, the Contours, and the Supremes. Songs that defined moments decades after their release (“Do You Love Me,” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”) and songs that forever changed the face of popular music (“My Girl,” “What’s Going On,” “War”). Sadly this collection only covers the first half of Gordy and company’s run, ending in 1972 when Motown left its home base of Detroit for the sunny shores of California. But an examination of those years would also be worthy of its own double-disc set. For the die-hard Northern soul or Motown fanatic, there is little here that probably isn’t already in your collection. But for those looking for all of the hits that defined the Motown sound, or for those looking for a comprehensive introduction to the label, this very well could be all the Motown you ever need to purchase. ― Allmusic
